This adult Southern White Rhino cow, called Kunene, was recently spotted by the reserve staff to be fairly lame on her left frontlimb. Dr. Johan and the attending veterinarian decided to take some radiographs, as the lameness together with a large wound on the lower, inside part of the limb was a cause of concern. Unfortunately a bad fracture of one of the bones was diagnosed, together with a possible infected joint.
The cow’s limb was treated locally with an antibiotic bandage and medical grade honey. We also decided to apply a cast to the limb and put her on a course of strong antibiotics. We will be monitoring her closely to see how she responds to the treatment.
